I guess we have one more reason not to do the below. Or maybe people just do one anyway! At least ONE! (guess which one?)

Alcohol - we can still have one or two but show some serious control, people.

Alcohol & Seizures

Epilepsy.com for professionals - Alcohol

Amy Winehouse dies of alcohol withdrawal seizures

Smoking Increases Seizures and Risk for ALS

Smoking reduces serum levels of lamotrigine.

Can Smoking Cause Seizures?

Sex

Drugs Okay, don't do this.

Rock and Roll
Equipment that may interfere with the <vns> stimulator should be avoided. These include .... loudspeaker magnets.
How many loudspeaker magnets do you think are in those huge rock concert speaker towers??? VNS folks, stay out of the mosh pit up front. And those who are photosensitive, well....

Though Neil Young still plays, and he has epilepsy.

Ok I'm guilty of the odd rum, smoking and Rock (without the roll!) music lol.

Still contemplating quitting smoking but the problem is that I don't really want to O.o

Personally I was diagnosed with JME at 13 and started having tonic clonic seizures when I was around 16, and have never had a problem with drinking.

I can have a pretty large amount of alcohol and wake up the next morning without so much as a hangover, let alone a seizure! I think it's all down to the type of person and the type of epilepsy

I don't smoke nor do drugs though, I find both something I don't wish to dabble in for the risks of my health either way!

I am photosensitive and do go to clubs, but like a few people I know I just carry sunglasses around (colourful ones so it looks funny rather than all serious) and wear them if I feel I may be in danger from the lighting. It really works!

I don't drink, do not do drugs. That leaves a couple to keep life interesting.

I've never done any sort of illegal drugs. I figure that I'm on enough legal ones lol.

Going to a rock club on Friday, yay!

I've never done any sort of illegal drugs. I figure that I'm on enough legal ones lol.

here here!

My friends like to dabble in that sort of thing and often tell me I should smoke cannabis as apparently it's brilliant for epileptics but I'd hate to think what "coming down" and such would do to me or how it could mess with my existing drugs

Lol...no illegal drugs here, either...

No drinking, at least not lately. I do smoke and probably should give it up, though I really have no desire to quit so it probably wouldn't work out so well if I did try to quit. The smoking might actually be HELPING in a small way since Lamictal XR gives me awful side effects and smoking lowers the level of it in the bloodstream...hmmm. Maybe I could get my neuro to take me off Lamictal XR and find something else by telling him I'm going to start smoking 3 or 4 packs a day, lol (just joking, I wouldn't do that).

I guess I'm guilty of the speakers and loud music but I don't have a VNS so I should be okay there.

Thanks for posting, this is some interesting information!

My main vice isn't actually too bad apart from when I go too far, it's cycling. But there have beem a few times when I've thought it's a nice day, I'm not having any seizures today, why not go for a long bike ride. And then I end up barely able to walk. One ride was 99 miles because I got that lost! If I could have done the extra mile to make it 100, I would have but I really would have. lol

I rarely drink, the last time was New Year.

Rebecca does not drink, smoke, drugs
She does enjoy clubs and dancing
Her vice is sugar

:paperbag: Uh oh, I'm in big trouble. :noevil:

But hey, I'm only gonna live once, so I'm making the most of it.

I suppose everybody has different sensitivities, different auras, different triggers, and such. For myself, I can tell you that smoking mary jane (What do you want? I'm a boomer Kid who came of age in the sixties.) does not help and may make things worse. Besides, with Lamictal it made me feel very depressed and lousy. I was on another site recently and several people said it was a definite no-no with Lamictal. Alchohol will bring on seizures for most of us if I understand correctly. When my neurologist put me on Depakote years ago he warned me that alchohol would lower the effective level of the stuff in my blood to below the theraputic level. I proved he was right a couple of times and now won't take any more than a tiny taste of beer or wine. Dang!!

Alcohol in moderation won't necessarily bring on seizures (it doesn't for me). Despite what your neurologist said, alcohol won't lower the blood serum levels of Depakote -- but it can enhance some of its side effects. In general, alcohol and AEDs are self-reinforcing in terms of their sedative effects. So the alcohol makes the AED stronger and the AED makes the alcohol stronger.

Of course excessive drinking is another story altogether -- it can cause fatigue, and also affect blood sugar and hydration, so overdoing it is asking for trouble.

No drugs, illegal that is, no alcohol, no smokes, no loud music. Sugar is my only vice. I'd probably win 1st place for having the dullest lifestyle. :crying:

Jake,

After a misspent youth indulging in lots of stuff I can tell you that dead straight and sharp as a tack is the most exillerating frame of mind I've found. I know it sounds corny, but take it from someone who's been there, my friend.

Oh what I wouldn't give to not have any of the strange side effects from these legal drugs. When I was young I'd have paid good money for 'em. Now I just wish I could stay clear and straight through and through.

I don't do any drugs, except the pescription ones. My friend and I laughed one time when she saw how many pills I take in one day. She said if I ever got robbed someone would think they hit the jack pot until they saw what the pill were for.

I do smoke, the leagal stuf, but I really need to cut back/quit.

I do drink, but very rarely. Only when it's a special occasion and it's usually only one drink. I've never had a problem with it.

I do go to concerts with some pretty loud music. I will have seizures a day or two after but we've come to think that what's caused them is the excitement of being there. Anytime I go somewhere exciting I'm almost guarenteed to have a seizure within the next few days.

I've never had any problems in the bedroom but I am going to have a hystarectmay in about a month. I am using birth control but I don't want the chance of getting pregnant. I'm on too much meds that I can't quit taking and I don't know what it would do to me or the baby if I were to get pregnant.

As kind of hinted at in my earlier post I do have quite a few, lol.

I've been to 100+ rock concerts in my lifetime, about 5 since my diagnoses, but none have affected me like the last one. About 6 weeks ago I went to Sublime & 311 show and my hearing has never recovered. I also got lost in this very familiar venue, and somehow ended up in the line for the men's room. It was a very strange night!!!!!!! Never experienced that before at a concert, even tho I've been in the same "state of mind" at many shows. I am really concerned about the obvious hearing loss especially.

Gosh, I think I have all those vises and have been able to combine quite a few safely but at that concert, many unusual things/feelings seemed to happen.

haha,
we all have our vices. I was a straight edger for years. still dont drink smoke avoid drugs when i can.

I am just open minded :-)

spent several years working in a porn store. was a photographer for several bdsm and leather conventions. Not my thing, but observing and seeing how interesting and different the world really is fun.

Plus a street racer. raced cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, been chased by police drivers, tickets acquired in more than one place. illegal vehicles to win races. spent time in jail more than once

since my diagnoses I race bicycles. we street race. They are called alley cats. You meet some where, and given a list. you do it best you can, and either meet at the last stop for a party, or back at the beginning.

racing bicycles at night in traffic is interesting. the valentines race attract around 250+ people
