Here is a quick question for anybody. I believe it has been about two or three weeks, likely more, since I have fully switched to Vimpat from Lamotrigine. My back teeth bother me the most due to the way my bite is but I don't remember having this much issues with clenching. My jaw feels like it could lock up at times as it "cracks" or pops at times. It used to be that I rarely if ever reached bite plane and now I am almost looking at having it with me to use during the daytime.

My stressful home issues, 13 yr old with mental health issues and other problems, hasn't changed in years just a medication change. I was eating toast yesterday and had discomfort with the back teeth. I can notice it more with harder foods of course.

Jaw clenching isn't mentioned as a side effect of Vimpat (which doesn't mean it isn't, just that there haven't been reports). It will be interesting to see if other CWE members have experienced the same thing.

It might be worth a visit to the dentist to rule our other issues such as TMJ. If you use
a mouth guard it might need replacing. In the meantime, you could try warming the back of your neck with a washcloth or a heating pad -- that can help relax the neck and jaw muscles. And a neck massage might help too. :)

I'm wondering if there is an element of the lamotrigine that my body/system is missing seeing it was a mood regulator. But I don't recall any clenching on carbamazepine and my time on dilantin is so long ago that I don't remember any issues. The only real noticeable teeth pain/discomfort has been since fully on the Zimpat.

You could be right about the lamotrigine taper leaving you a bit more stressed. If so, that withdrawal side effect should go away. If it doesn't, or it gets worse, definitely let your neuro know.

I've been on Vimpat for quite some time, but I haven't had that reaction with the jaw before. I'd speak to your dentist and check in with your neuro if you're concerned. I have heard some people suffer jaw clenching as a complex partial, so it might be that happening and the Vimpat not covering it. As I said, I'd second Nakamova on the dentist, and add in a visit to your neuro, too.

I've also been on Vimpat for a while & haven't had any issues with my teeth or jaws since starting it. Topamax hasn't caused issues of that sort for me, either.

I made an appointment yesterday with my dentist to talk about the pain with my teeth and jaw. I'm going to send my epilepsy clinic program director an email letting her know what's going on. They put my emails on my file and let my neurologist know. I have a follow up appointment with him already in April.

I suffer with bruxism (jaw clenching/chewing in my sleep; believe it's there in the day time too) and got myself a hypnotherapy cd, it's all to do with yawning, thus relaxing the jaw muscles (it does works if you keep it up). Says best to do this before the main snooze but can do this for afternoon naps aswel. This was before I was put on any medication (not to say medication isn't causing this) - just a thought!

Have they associated the clenching/chewing with your epilepsy in some way? Are you on any other medications? I have been told that I should go on power naps when I get home from work.

There are times of the day, not everyday, that I go through short yawning spells. My wife also says that I am very twitchy/jerky in my sleep.

I'm still wondering if there is still some effect from the Lamotrigine on my teeth as up to a few months ago I was taking Lamotrigine for almost three years. People say Lamotrigine is hard on your teeth.

I have something called air hunger I have to yawn to get lungful of air.
Many years ago my daughter was on hydrpridl I tried it myself my lower jaw felt like going threw upper one it was horrible so took daughter off them instantly and took few days before effects wore off

I took vimpat for several months along with my oxtellar. I did not have any of the side effects that you are describing. I did however have horrible migraines that got worse and more frequent the longer I was on it.
