Hi, my name is Bryan and I am new to this site. I'm looking forward to being a part of this community. I'm 33 years old and I've had epilepsy for most of my life having my first seizure when I was 10. I've always either had grand mal seizures (only in my sleep) and complex partial seizures ( while awake). I take 1500 mg of Keppra daily to control my seizures and it works most of the time with a few breakthrough's here and there, especially if I don't get proper sleep. Lately I've been have something new happening to me though and It's rather scary and I'm curious if anyone else here has something similar.
Lately when I'm laying down and I'm drifting off to sleep I suddenly get these really strange sensations throughout my body. My body will kind of stiffen up, almost like some kind of pressure is being forced on my body and I'm not able to move. This wakes me up and is disturbing my sleep. While this is happening I often hear a loud ringing noise, almost like an electrical sound. Some times I notice that my arms will shake a little uncontrollably while this is going on. I find that I have to fight really hard to snap out of it when it happens, which usually ends with me jumping up in my bed.
I've heard of other kinds of seizures that sound like this but I'm not really sure because I've also been told that is could be something called sleep paralysis. Although I've had epilepsy for a long time which makes me inclined to think that it's related to the epilepsy. This happened once or twice before my last visit with my Neurologist and I fully described it to him but he didn't really seem too concerned, which really bothered me. They've been happening more frequently though and I have another appointment with him in about a week and a half. The problem is that this is really freaking me out and I'm not sure my Neurologist is taking this seriously like he has in the past. I've been with him for many years and would hate to have to switch. If anybody has had an experience like this and has any advice or suggestions for me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You....

Hi Bryan. I'm 56 and have been diagnosed with E and been on meds since 1982. I am pretty sure I had seizure activity long before that but it had never been recognized as such. It's hard to pin down an exact age, but from when I was probably 6 or 7 until at least my late teens I would sometimes hear an odd knocking sound when I was going to sleep, and often when I was waking up in the morning. I would also wake up at times in the middle of the night smelling an absolutely horrible odor. Things like that can be related to seizures, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of what you are experiencing is also seizure-related. If you haven't already done so, google your symptoms and see what information you can find. Try to find info from scholarly journals or "serious" sources, and not from speculative forums or alternative medicine sorts of sites. Doctors may not tend to take such things very seriously, not surprisingly. From your findings, write up a few specific questions for your doc. Here's a link to the sort of site I'm talking about:

Best of luck and let us know what happens.
