Hi, my name is Bryan and I am new to this site. I'm looking forward to being a part of this community. I'm 33 years old and I've had epilepsy for most of my life having my first seizure when I was 10. I've always either had grand mal seizures (only in my sleep) and complex partial seizures ( while awake). I take 1500 mg of Keppra daily to control my seizures and it works most of the time with a few breakthrough's here and there, especially if I don't get proper sleep. Lately I've been have something new happening to me though and It's rather scary and I'm curious if anyone else here has something similar.
Lately when I'm laying down and I'm drifting off to sleep I suddenly get these really strange sensations throughout my body. My body will kind of stiffen up, almost like some kind of pressure is being forced on my body and I'm not able to move. This wakes me up and is disturbing my sleep. While this is happening I often hear a loud ringing noise, almost like an electrical sound. Some times I notice that my arms will shake a little uncontrollably while this is going on. I find that I have to fight really hard to snap out of it when it happens, which usually ends with me jumping up in my bed.
I've heard of other kinds of seizures that sound like this but I'm not really sure because I've also been told that is could be something called sleep paralysis. Although I've had epilepsy for a long time which makes me inclined to think that it's related to the epilepsy. This happened once or twice before my last visit with my Neurologist and I fully described it to him but he didn't really seem too concerned, which really bothered me. They've been happening more frequently though and I have another appointment with him in about a week and a half. The problem is that this is really freaking me out and I'm not sure my Neurologist is taking this seriously like he has in the past. I've been with him for many years and would hate to have to switch. If anybody has had an experience like this and has any advice or suggestions for me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You....
