Adding to an old thread.

Anyone outside Ohio eat pumpkin blossoms. It is the flower from the plant dipped in egg and crackers, then fried. Mmmmmm.

I agree with Robin's escargot, but forget those eels.

Grits? Not the southern kind made out of grain that taste like Cream of Wheat. I am talking about good old meat grits made from scrap meat of pork or beef. Hi cholesterol - yep. Hi taste - YEP!

I am from alabama, grits are made from rice, cream of wheat is wheat. there is a difference

one of the more unusual would be fried twinkies.

but i am from a part of the world, they will fry anything that fits in a fryer

Natto found in China town here in Vegas. I'll try anything once but hesitated when I smelled this stuff. If you enjoy the smell of rotting garbage from the bottom of the trash can, then you'll love this stuff. My son eats this stuff. Yuck!

LOL...When I was growing up in Nebraska the 2 most unusual local foods were pig brains and rocy mountain oysters. pig brains actually have no taste...you put them in scrambled eggs and they pretty much taste like scrambled eggs. They just turn the dish gray...ok, not exactly an appetizing picture...I know... The other dish, rocky mountain oysters, are bull testicles cut up and deep fat fried..now those are yummy...:) In fact one town I visited had a yearly testicle fetival....hey, if you're a farmer or rancher, you'll use any excuse you can to throw a party and not spend the day in the fields or pastures. :)

lol hey skilly! we call those prairie oysters here! geez are they good! with butter and garlic and chilli! mmm Calgary Stampede is where i had them!

But really weird stuff in winnipeg....ummmm we are the slurpee capital of the world!

I'm half Scottish, soooo HAGGIS! a sheeps stomach or bladder stuffed with all the innards of the sheep that would usually be thrown away, and some herbs and barley....very nice with neeps and tatties ( turnips and potatoes for those not in the know...).

come to think of it, we have a very prominent inuit people way up north here in canada that eat moose, elk, bear, seal *including the eye, which is considered an honour if you are chosen to eat it*, whale blubber and bison. moslty all of this is raw, or salted and cured, *but not smoked* so it still has the raw taste and texture.

The worst i ever tried of this food was some "power bar" the early natives made for long journeys or hunts and it was buffalo meat, cranberries, juniper berries, and nuts shaped into a bar form *it wasnt raw, it was baked.* but it was horrible. Juniper berrie is SICK!

Other thing i dislike:

Cow tounge: how can you eat something that can taste you back?

Chicken hearts: no thanks! seeing tiny versions of my heart on my plate is not appealing

shrimp with the eyes and legs on it: How do i know its dead, and not sleeping! it can see me eat it!

and beer, lots of beer. There was a bar serving them when I was in Ireland.

I like

pumpkin blossoms, too, Buckeye!!!!

I'm willing to skip the tripe, head cheese and a few other things in this thread. But I'll go for calamari. I haven't had it in years, but my great grand-father used to make a killer batch of it.

My friend is a Turkish Cypriot, and a delicacy that she occasionally cooks up is a whole sheeps head. Her 4 yr old daughter absolutely loves eating the eyeballs, and her 13yr old son's favourite part is the brains.......:?

It sounds like it can be very regional. According to Wiki, they are supposed to be made out of corn, but I don't doubt you use rice. They just taste like cream of wheat to me. Maybe I would think different if I had some really good Alabama grits. We have the grain based style here too, but those are usually called hominy grits. It sounds like our meat version is VERY local.

Hold the Haggis and those oysters, but neeps and tatties sound fine. How do you prepare them?

Meetz, I had calimari just two weeks ago. Mmmmm.

When I was in England they had some crazy potato chip flavors... I remember lamb with mint flavor, and prawn cocktail.

I heard that in the United States, dill pickle chips and ketchup chips are non existent. Is this true?? I love dill pickle chips.

Supporting what Rae said, we are the slurpee capital of the world. You'll see people here drinking slurpees when it is -40°C out.

Also, regarding the shirmp with the eyes and legs still attached... my inlaws are from El Salvador, and FULL shrimp in some sort of tomato sauce is a traditional recipe... I had to eat it so I wouldn't be rude. Removing the eyes and legs before eating each one was really uncomfortable.

Poor shrimp.

at least in the south you can get dill pickle chips,
it is a regional company I think. It is not one of the national ones I know.

LOL some of these are fantastic but for me it's good old vegemite and tomato on toast!

vegemite is awesome! i love it! never with tomato though, and its so much better than Peanut butter

The main local food that I have seen non-locals not like is Cincinnati style chili. It is served a variety of ways and we even have 4 different restaurant chains that serve it. Go to wikipedia and look up Cincinnati Chili for what it is.
The 2 best ways are a 3-way or Cheese Coney. 3-way is spaghetti, chili and cheese. You can add onion and beans to make it a 4 or 5 way. Cheese Coney is hot dog, chili, cheese, mustard, and onion. You can take off the mustard and onion and yes it comes on a bun.

C'mon Knothing. Its 5-way or none at all. :roflmao:

I love regular chili more, but rarely turn down a meal at Skyline.:woot:

There has been some all the wall stuff on this post! I've got to add to it
Quebec is the Poutine capital of the world and althought the stuf is a heartattack looking for a place to happen I love it. Especially with side order of steamies. Another regional fav is going to the Cabane Au Sucre or Sugaring Off. There is scrambbled eggs, ham, pancakes, creton and as much maple syrup as you can handle
The weirdest food I've eaten is a tossup between LIVE baby octopus (ewww!) and kebbah= raw lamb which was pretty good
Haggis is one of my fav's
