I began go have what I thought was the beginning of a tonic clonic seizure but went only as far as where my arms and legs began to seize and relax. My chest hurt until I could hardly breath and my breaths were short and painful as usual and my heart raced, but that was all that happened. This happened about 5 or 6 times and stopped, then I went to sleep for about an hour and awakened feeling fine. What was that?

I rarely have tonic/clonic seizures but I quite often have days when I feel a partial seizure coming on & it just stops dead in its tracks. Once or twice I'd had days where I'd have that happen all day until one finally ran its full course.

It's not that unusual for me but you might want to tell your neurologist at your next visit.

My daughter had a situation like this. Can't remember if she was on tegretol or gabapentin at the time. But she had trouble breathing. The neurologist she had then said it was a seizure. When she was taking Lamictal or Trileptal (sorry just fuzzy memory without looking at my notes) she had situations where the muscles in her leg would contract over and over again. I was also told that this was a seizure.

These have never happened again now that she is med free. She only has convulsions which may or may not be considered a tonic clonic.

Hi---
I'm curious....what do you mean when you say she may or may not have convulsions that are TC seizures?

When I started this thread, I think I described it all wrong. This "thing" started like this...my chest hurt in the middle and I had a premonition that a bad tonic/clonic seizure was going to happen. I remember thinking, "ok, lets get started and get this thing over with", My breathing got real short and my chest hurt like it was being stabbed and the knife was twisting in it, and it kept on coming like the seizure was imminent, like always does before the tcs start, and it was like a sneeze that you expect and it never happens. I kept waiting for the seizure to start and it never did. I even crawled onto the floor from the bed so I would have more room and not fall off the bed. I remember the little myoclonic jerks here and there, but nothing big. The thing is, I remember everything that happened and I waited for a seizure to start, but it never did, and I was almost mad that it didn't because I was expecting one. I can't believe I just said that. I'm still puzzles and my next appointment with my neurologist isn't for months.

Maybe you should mark down what happened & how you felt while the details are still fresh, or if you're like me then mark them down as they come back to you. That way you can give your neuro an accurate account of the incident.

Staying awake through it

It sounds like a new type of seizure--maybe a complex partial. Mine get like that and i have never had a TC. Any new types though-report definitely to the Neuro. It may be progress for you. I don't know much, but it probably still doesnt feel good, but maybe its all in the half-glass full perspective.

What's happening to me now

I went from complex partial to tonic clonic an I stil continue to have absence, simple partial, complex partial and now tonic clonic. What else is there? I'll be calling my neuroligist Monday because these happened again last night during the night. Believe me, about the journal. I've kept one for over 40 years. I have 4 folders in my filing cabinet and I have to take three out and box them up now. they aren't important enough to keep anymore. My doctor says they have to go through my files every now and then and put some in their archives, too. It's nearly 45 years worth now.

I have been reading that the convulsions from low blood sugar might actually be different than what is happening in a tonic clonic seizure. I am not sure.

I have been considering this lately. I have been reading conflicting information.
I would like to find some studies of EEGs or VEEGs of a seizure due to low blood sugar. I am not sure that this has been tested much since putting someone into a low blood sugar state would be subjecting them to the possibility of coma.

A type of Myoclonic Epilepsy

Reticular reflex myoclonus is thought to be a type of generalized epilepsy that originates in the brainstem, the part of the brain that connects to the spinal cord and controls vital functions such as breathing and heartbeat. Myoclonic jerks usually affect the whole body, with muscles on both sides of the body affected simultaneously. In some people, myoclonic jerks occur in only a part of the body, such as the legs, with all the muscles in that part being involved in each jerk. Reticular reflex myoclonus can be triggered by either a voluntary movement or an external stimulus

Robin,

I know I've stated this before, but I also have diabetes, Type 1, along with E, and I would not want to be put onto a seizure or videotaped because of low blood sugar! Not only no, but HELL NO!! Not only could one go into a coma, one could DIE if their blood sugar is that low!

My endocrinologist had me increase my insulin at night and some nights I wake in the night and my glucose is dangerously low, so I would not want to be in any kind of study further risking my life. BTW, if you suspect your daughter has hypoglycemia, is she seeing a endocrinologist? Just curious?

We are starting on that path. New and different specialists.
Doesn't happen as quickly as one would like.

I can tell you that I'm most definitely hypoglycemic and my seizures have a lot to do with that. It's a difficult transition with food though, I have to watch for the GARD essentials for epilepsy, the key NO-NOs for hypoglycemia AND the other NO-NOs for candida. It's amazing to sit and do a menu weekly.

I've actually had to add organic, farm raised (you should see trying to find this one) salmon as I can't eat avocado the first 3 weeks with candida treatment.

Now, in terms of the VEEG/EEG for hypoglycemia----although I wasn't intentionally put in a state of high hypoglycemia, I wasn't eating when I got my last VEEG (and only VEEG). Reasoning---no one could figure out all the symptoms I had. So, it was FINALLY figured out that the hypoglycemia was triggering seizures. As I said, though, by accident.
