Yesterday morning my daughter seemed like she might be having very small absences but said she wasn't. She had a couple of hours at work in the evening and said while there she felt she was zoning out a bit and then coming back with an actual physical jerk, involving her shoulders and arms. I have never seen this before. Absences, yes but only manifesting in speech delay or as if a switch is going off and on in her eyes. Can anyone identify with this? Thanks.

Complex Partials? (if it was, your daughter wouldn't remember what happened)
My daughter "zoned out" the other day while we were driving (i'm not sure how long for as she sits behind me). When i turned around she appeared to be having an absence like seizure and didn't respond to her name or my grabbing her leg. About 15 seconds later, she "came to" but did it with a big jerk/startle (it was almost like she was startled to realize where she was and that i was right in front of her if that makes sense?)

Thanks for that. I don't think it was CPs as she seems quite aware of what was happening. It does sound similar to what happened to your daughter in the car though - I hope you were both OK, that sounds scary.

I won't start another thread but it's a big day for us tomorrow, the start of the exams that will determine whether my daughter can do what she wants at university. No idea how it will go. If she does well, it it will be great for her self-esteem. If she doesn't, it's going to be a huge setback for her confidence. Her two older brothers both did very well and while we have told her and told her it's not about measuring herself against them (for a start they didn't have E to contend with) it's not getting through.

Crossing all my crossables for both of you that all goes well tomorrow.

It might be a simple partial with a motor component -- those can affect muscle activity, and cause jerking movements of the foot, face, arm, or another part of the body.

It also sounds a bit like the same kind of benign myoclonus (called a hypnic jerk) people get right when they're falling asleep.

I hope that she aces her exams. :)

Thankyou both and thanks for the myoclonus suggestions Nak, I was thinking along those lines.

Not sure how the exam went today, she said it was OK but was a bit non-commital about it. She also went back and changed a lot of answers, just hoping she wasn't right the first time. Probably the toughest two, English and maths, coming up next, English at 9am on Monday. She's not at her best in the mornings...
