How long of a grand mal seizure should my father wait to concerned? 5 minutes I've heard. Am I wrong? He thinks longer.

Yes it's five mins from what I've read too, that's when an ambulance is needed. I'd definitely call an ambulance if my daughter had a seizure that lasted over five minutes.

Yup, 5 minutes is the standard metric. (see below). But if there's any doubt go ahead and call for help.

CALL AN AMBULANCE IF:
-- You know it is the person’s first seizure
-- The seizure continues for more than five minutes
-- One tonic-clonic seizure follows another without the person regaining consciousness between seizures
-- The person is injured during the seizure
-- You believe the person needs urgent medical attention
