Hi there,

My husband had another seizure during the night on Sunday so on Monday I took him to the ER so they can determine his medication level and I also asked them to do his blood platelets as they've been dropping rapidly. I phoned in the results to the neurologist as well as the platelets. Normal is about 150 and in one month my husbands dropped from 108 to 77.

The neurologist called back and was quite concerned about his platelets dropping as she said seizure meds can cause this so she's taking him off his current meds. For one week he has to take half of them, then for one more week he has to half them again and in 2 weeks she wants him off them. For 4 weeks she's checking his blood platelets to see if they bounce back and this will determine the next medication she'll put him on. So he may be without seizure meds for about a week but she's convinced that since he had 4 nocturnal seizures that this will be his pattern and at least he's safe in bed. And of course, I will be there too.

Wow - I am so glad he had that seizure on the weekend because with his platelets dropping so quickly, we'd never even know.

So I'm hoping he'll be okay and we'll eventually get his seizure meds under control.

WOW! Thats good that they found out about his platelets being so low. I hope things start to get better for him. I hope the dr can find a good medication that will control his seizures!

I'm so glad I was pushy about the platelets. We went to the ER to get a blood sample to see what his medication level was and I pushed to get the platelets done. But I was shocked that they'd dropped so much, so fast. The neurologist doesn't know if it's the seizure meds but she says they can do that. So I'm glad at least she's taking action to find out.

I hope they can finally find a medication that works. These seizures are new to us and he's had 4 nocturnal seizures since Feb. so we're just trying to get used to this new development in our lives. I'm having trouble sleeping because everytime he moves around, I jump up thinking he's having a seizure. Yikes.

I'd be curious to see which med they end up prescribing. All three anti-seizure meds I've been on (Dilantin, Zonegran, and Lamictal), have given me low CBC readings -- though not as dramatically low as your husband's.

I hope he and you do okay during the taper-down period.

Hey Nakamova,

I'll let you know what she ends up prescribing. Right now he's on divalproex and he's being weaned off of it. So he won't get the new one until early September. His platelets dropped fast.

I'll let you know. :)
