Just diagnosed with atonic seizures and it seems to be less common and
wondering if there are others dealing with this type?
Thanks a bunch:)

Hi - I do not have atonic seizures, but I have recently met someone - also an adult - who does. It seems they're largely under control at this point but hey were quite bad and she often sustained significant bumps and bruises. I know you are looking for people on this site who have them, but just thought I'd post this so you know that you are not alone :)

I took care of a young woman years ago when I lived out in Colorado who had them. She had them daily as they could not get her meds figured out. She had to where a helmet all day, everyday because of them. It took 2 of us to give her a bath (they didn't have a shower) incase she had one during it. She had hers since childhood. She was a lovely lady!!! :)

Hi, I have atonic seizures. I am standing up, then I am down with bruised knees. One time I fractured my head. I never thought about wearing a helmet. My neurologist never suggested it.

I did not know that they were rare. Well, I have fallen down a lot over the years. I try to remember to use my walker. Why don't you try a walker.

I have had atonic seizures since childhood. I too have been struggling with finding people who have atonic seizures rather than grand mal. The majority of people, who have epilepsy and who don't, only seem to know of grand mal seizures rather than the variety of seizures.

It is relieving to know that there are others that have atonic seizures. In the sense, that I have been struggling with figuring out if I should take medications if I have atonic seizures (which seem minor compared to grand mal seizures).

I've been having atonics since I was about 4, although I wasn't diagnosed until I was 6 (19 now). It's definitely more uncommon than TCs, absences and SP/CP. It's even more uncommon amongst adults. Atonics can be pretty brutal though, some of my best scars and injuries have been from atonics.

I had one after two tonic clonics and before they put me on meds. At least we are assuming it was one. One minute I'm putting my daughter on the school bus, I turn to walk up the driveway, and then I'm down on the ground. I was confused and thought I'd tripped because I was looking at my phone, but realized I didn't even have my phone. It was a very hard fall, I was bloody and bruised, enough that the driver jumped out of his seat kind of freaked out. I just burst into tears because I really didn't know what happened. I'd had a tc the night before. Nothing has happened since meds, but it was pretty freaky. Off to work I went... I hope meds can help you. I've read they are less common as well.
