Can you have auras while you sleep/while you are just dozing off to sleep?

I'm not quite asleep but usually I will be just dozing off and the "aura" will somewhat wake me up...I will see everything blow up like a balloon...(that's the "aura") Has anybody expierienced an aura while they were drifting off to sleep or while they were asleep?

When I first developed epilepsy and had seizures only asleep in bed (or just napping on the couch :)) an aura always woke me up.

My first auras were "pictures" of my sisters and me at very young ages playing in the metal tub in the yard back on the farm SEEN FROM ABOVE.

Oh yes..... you're not the only one. Just last night I had a couple of auras while awake. I then had one last one after closing my eyes to go to sleep.

Here too

I've posted it in CWE I think but I know
I've posted in EF threads about it.

It's not a dream, it's a freaking friggin'
aura right smack in the middle of the
sleep!

yeah...I have ones in the middle of the night also where I wake up and I am almost in a panic state, and I know I just had a seiuzre...but I didn't know if the 'balloon' thing was an aura or not no I'm pretty sure it is...

Yes I have had those auras alot of times right before drifting off to sleep.
I also, have had them in my sleep and I wake up while they are hitting me then.

must be what Tripp is having!

I am so glad I read this.....I just bet this is what Tripp is having...he looks almost frightened when he has one...he will sit up and look around!

Yes.

Brain activity changes when the eyes are open and closed as well as when transitioning into sleep or wakeful states.

yeah..sometimes I am sitting up...when I have them in the middle of the night....
other times I will be lying down, but my bed will be torn apart. All of the blankets will be everywhere and I am really sore so I can tell that I have just had a seizure...

When you say sitting up, does someone find you like that? My husband would find me resting my head in my hand while leaning on my elbow. He said I was sound asleep. I would be like that for hours or at least everytime he woke up I would be like that. When I had the EEG's for a week at a time, these episodes did record as seizures and I always ended up that way. Has anyone ever heard of what may cause you to do that?

no...I wake up right after I have those seizures...

I have no idea...sorry :(

Thanks anyway. It's always interesting when you find others that have the same "odd" experiences that you do and with "E" and we all know there are many!

Absolutely, I almost ALWAYS have seizures (if any) and auras just before I fall asleep. I've only had about 2% of my seizures and auras when I'm wide awake.

E!!!!

i think this may have happind to me a few times
i woke up in the middle of the night or about 6pm and i feel not right the next i have a sz grrrrrr.

I have noticed when Tripp is sleeping and has those his head will turn left and he will make this snoring sound...it is over in a matter of seconds...and he wakes and goes back to sleep.

thas happind to me i woke up after a sz not nothing i had a sz or not then fellalsleep and my bf ryan tolds me in the morning

cazzie take care

Don't Worry! Your not the only one. I have had this same experience many times through my life. I'd have to say in the very beginning when it would happen I thought it was a terrible dream. But, as the years went by I realized it was the real thing and I just learned to let the aura do it's thing. It's happened so many times that honestly I don't even notice it anymore.

I do not ever recall having an aura that woke me. I have had tonic-clonics in the middle of the night. My tonic clonic seizures are always preceded by auras, thus I would assume I do have them, they just don't wake me up.

However, the transition to sleep has been a frequent trigger for me. I get the screwed up visual perception, the dizziness, and the fear/anger reaction. Luckily, these have been limited the last few years.

Basic point - Yes, the transition to sleep state does seem like a trigger to me.

KAM:

My ex was a sound sleeper however he was so
used to the seizures he basically ignored them after
ONLY he gotten used to it all.

However when I had the last tenant; the epileptologist
wanted him to monitor me, there were a few times when
I must had a complex partial and wandered into his room
(the ex-tenant's) and fell asleep on his huge
bed. Because the bed was so big, he didn't
wake me up for I was already "out cold".

HE DID remark several times - to the epileptologist's
Nurse (I think, or his Staff) and to myself about
how several times of how I lapsed into tonic
mode (going frozen stiff was his words), and
then suddenly shot straight up like a mummy
with eyes wide opened and then just went
completely lax (limp) and collapsed. He had to
put me back into sleep position.

As for my memory - I have none of it at all.
When the epileptologist was informed of it, he
didn't act surprised at all and acknowledged that
they were seizures, however, he wanted to know
if she (I) was shaking, jerking, etc. My (ex)
tenant said I was. The only thing was I can
remember him saying was that one time only
one side of my body was affected and the
other two times my whole body was affected,
but all those times - he kept pillows and the
comforter over me to keep me from hurting
myself.

He (ex-tenant) did tell me it was too spooky,
and yet, he also tells me the time that it all
happens - between 2-3 AM! (And I had been
asleep since 9-10 PM)

However - it was my son who was sitting here
with his girlfriend reading through the forum
thread on these nocturnal seizures to her. And
he was talking about that. He had the same
experiences with me when we had to be in
the Apartment temporarily under Police Pro-
tection while undergoing separation/divorce;
and while it was a 1 bedroom (a huge one),
we had no furniture but we slept together on
a king-sized foam on the floor and my son,
who's used to it - had witnessed the same
thing, but it's nothing new to him, it just
happens.

Like he says, Doctors can't do anything about
it, and all they say is let it run its course and
it will soon be over, just make sure she doesn't
get hurt.

But my son's right - it does happen once in
awhile, and there's nothing they can do about
it and they are right - let it run its course,
unless of course, it goes into SE or
lasts longer than 5 minutes.

When I asked my son how long does it last, he
told me it doesn't last very long, maybe a minute
or less. Same thing what my ex-tenant implied,
doesn't last very long.

HOWEVER, when I wake up in the morning or
whenever I wake up - I feel like I've been beaten
up by a gang of baseball bats (my interpretation
of it). I have a headache, feeling dazed, out of
sync, woozy, and depends on how bad it was;
it could last for an hour after waking up to all
day to several days for me to get back in sync!

It's the ones that takes me all day or days to get
back in sync. It's hard to get in sync when you're
in "malfunction junction" and you're trying to be
"operational" and it's like trying to make a Radio
work that's got a blown fuse and you've got tons
of static - it's playing but not quite to perfection
and full of distortions and it makes you want to
take that portable Radio and toss it into the trash
can! That's exactly HOW I feel with my brain when
it's moderate-severe to severely out of sync!

If it's really bad - I'm also prone to sleep more;
another thing my son knows I've been hit hard.
But like he says as far as what the Doctors have
remarked in the past - There's nothing they can
do for me.

It DOES drive me up the freaking wall - especially
when I have these below and ....

  • have tons of things to do ending up being delayed / postponed
  • having no idea if you're coming or going
  • don't dare leave the house
  • have to be supervised / monitored (can't be left alone) - even if asleep all day
  • simple task/chore/etc - becomes so complicated; frustration is a major issue
  • avoid computers, televisions, electronics, reading, writing, thinking, etc
  • so forth that I could end up rambling.

It is pure massive feat there; but we are used to it,
whereas my son doesn't even take a second thought
to it anymore having grown up with it all. Even with
my ex-husband; same with him too. It was like we
had a Plan A and Plan B; if things were going well
with me, then everything was Plan A, if it wasn't
with me, then everything went on Plan B - no big
deal. That was before my marriage began to fall
apart (won't go into details there).

But all of these things implied above - were all based
from the #*!+&^ Nocturnal Seizures!

Sorry if this post was long, just wanted to put
some detailed perspectives from my lifespan from
marriage and current stages.
