Looking ahead to surgery, but fear is setting in.

BIGMAN,

I am finding the FODMAPs diet to be unsatisfying and therefore very difficult to follow. Furthermore, I am a gum chewer and the ingredients in sugar free gum are bad on the FODMAPs diet. Although I see a big difference in being able to digest food much better and not be in pain, I don’t think I can live on such a limited diet. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I know the FODMAPs diet is a real pita to follow.

I find the best thing to do is limit the stuff you are sure that bothers you.
From there, it's trial and error. Check both lists carefully for good replacements.

IE: Bananas are on the bad list. Plantains are on the good list.
I love bananas, but they do a number on my stomach. So I eat them less. I try to limit
them to just banana bread. While plantains I can grill, bake, or even fry. They don't bother me at all.

Milk is another issue for people with IBS. Dairy milk may or may not bother you.
Soy would be a good alternative. But it's not IBS friendly. While Almond milk is IBS
friendly. They both are quite tasty too. You can also get them in chocolate.

It's a guide, you can deviate from it. Nobodies gonna yell at you if you don't stick to it completely. You'll know when your body starts aching.

Like you said, I already know a lot of foods and drinks that I can’t tolerate. But, I’m not sure about everything. Also, some of the things they say are good on the FODMAP diet, make me sick (eggs, for example). I switched to almond milk several years ago because I can’t tolerate regular milk. I can’t eat tomatoes or tomato sauce. I can’t tolerate anything that has citric acid (e.g., orange juice, lemonade, etc.). I can’t drink soda, either. The list goes on and on. I’m pretty sure I have an issue with gluten which greatly limits my diet if I don’t want to suffer. Artificial sweeteners also upset my stomach so I can’t chew gum anymore. My digestive system is very messed up. I love chocolate and I have a sweet tooth, but I suffer the consequences when I eat those things. I am actually a chocoholic and sugar addict sonI am having a really hard time with this diet. But, as I previously mentioned I see a big difference in how I feel in trying to do the FODMAPs diet. Do you know if there are any gluten free breads that taste decent. I tried one and couldn’t stand it. I spit it out. I love raw vegetables. I love mushrooms, but some of those foods are really bad for people like us.

I've never got gluten free breads on purpose. So I can't give specifics on them.

Sam's Choice (Walmart/Sam's Club) brand plain & honey wheat breads have a nice taste.
I'd assume the gluten free to as good. But I've never tried them yet.

Krusteaz (mixes) is a brand I tried for other products. Those have been good. So I'd try their gluten free items.

Udi's is a brand I've never tried, but it's supposed to be good.

🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞 Whoa it's been five long months since I last posted here.

But the good news it's past 67 months, and no seizures. :)

Overall still in the same boat of IBS, headaches, arthritis. I'm trying not to rock it too much. The holiday(s) were ok, not too stressful. But
they weren't too fun with the arthritis. The pain Rx and vitamin I take add to my tiredness. :( Which make visits with others, watching tv, movies,
a chore. It also makes the others upset when I fall asleep during a visit. :(

Congrats on staying seizure-free! Sorry to hear that the other ailments are still plaguing you.

6 years already. That’s fantastic.
Hope everything else is going well with your other health issues

Wow! When's the [socially-distanced] party?

:) (y)
Just blast your favorite track and have a drink (of your choice) for me.

IMHO I reached the first of "my preferred" post-surgery milestones.
6yr - 12yr - 18yr - 24yr +

When I reach my last milestone I will feel safe enough to attempt slowly getting off AEDs.

When I had my surgery I think I wanted to go 5 years seizure free as I'd never gone that long. I managed just over 2 years until the seizure ls returned (1st simple partials then eventually complex or as theyre known now focal).

I gave up counting and just go day by day. If I can go less 2 a month good 1 - 0 a month great

Whoa 77 months and still chugging along without seizures. (y)

This virus stuff is really stressing everyone out. (n)
It's just messing with my IBS. My "normal" days get all wonky because of this added stress. But it's better than having seizures.

I hope everyone else is doing ok. Masks on, and stay safe.

Glad to see everything is going so well. 20 months seizure free now. and just got my driver's license back.

Sounds good, what kind of vehicle do you have? I have my license, but no vehicle. To costly atm, plus I'd rather drive in the country. The city is full of crazy drivers.

a Chevy Colorado pickup.
Lucky for me most of what we have are country roads because I also hate traffic.

Sounds good. (y) But I'm eyeing Wrangler or Gladiator ;)

There's nothing like driving the back roads in the country. Just you, the road, and nature. It's much less stressful than the city.
Although I was born & raised in the city, I have a country heart.

Even though I can drive at anytime, I choose not to. At least in the city, too many crazy drivers, pedestrians, cellphones, etc.
