I had 2 seizures this Sunday.

The first was at about 7 am. I was in the bed at the time of the seizure and I was shaking during it but I don't know how bad because my husband can't see the bed from where he was sitting. He said that the cat flew off the bed when I'd had it so I have a feeling I was having a good shake. When he went in to see what was going on he said he tried to get me to get back in bed but I wouldn't listen to anything that he was telling me, I knew what I wanted to do and that's what I was going to do, this is sometimes a normal thing I do during a seizure. After I came out of the seizure I took my meds just like a normal day, 7am is med time for me, I didn't know I had it until my husband told me when I came out into the living room.

When I went into the bathroom I saw that my pj bottoms were wet. The bed wasn't wet but I was also having the seizure while I was standing. I don't know if I could have spilled something on them when I had taken my meds in the bedroom or not?

The second was in the afternoon while I was laying on the couch. I had pretty much the same type of seizure. He said I was shaking or more of a fast muscle flex back and forth. I was also grinding my teeth and I'd chewed the inside of my mouth during it. When I came out of the seizure, which I didn't know I had until he told me, I went into the bathroom and the pants I had on were wet. The couch was hardly wet at all, barely nothing there. Again I don't know if it's possible if I'd split something on myself. I could have drank something during the seizure, I like to do things during my seizures.

I've never lost my bladder before during a seizure and I've had epilepsy for over 10 years, could I be now? I don't think I've ever chewed my mouth during a seizure either.

This sounds like a tonic/clonic, so yes, you could have lost control of your bladder even after 10 years of suffering from E. The first time I remember having an "accident" was when I seized in my sleep, after having seizures for 20 years. And I've only bitten the inside of my mouth a couple of times, but I've had many TCs. Weird things happen!

I'm 39. I don't think I'm at loosing your bladder age yet?

I very rarely have tonic clonics either so that could be what caused it.

During my nocturnal clinic seizures I usually lose bladder control, I think it can happen I regardless of your age

Well, I'm 56 and have had seizures for 49 years. Neurologists are always surprised when I tell them that I've never lost my bladder during a seizure. So it must be pretty common.

I wasn't having seizures in my 20s, 30s or early 40s except for the times the doc wanted med to try other meds (never worked). But once hormones started changing for peri-menopausal phase - in my mid 40s - my seizures came back and they were different.

This would be a great time to be documenting everything - eating, sleeping, periods, stressors - and re-evaluating it with your doc. "The change" happens at different times for different people. I have friends who were done with their period by 40!

İ am 54 and also have had seizures since I was a child with a few periods where I was seizure free
I think a journal is a good idea I learned about it from this site. Congrulations on your grandchild.

I'm 53 and I've had epilepsy since over 50 years and when I have a tonic clonic I is when I lose control of my bladder sometime.

And I'm 57 and have had seizures for 30+ years. My epileptologist has told me that losing bladder control during seizure(s) is very common, regardless of age or gender. It can happen during a CP, too!

I am one of those who went thru menopause in my early 40's. My ob/gyn kept telling me I was "too young" to be going thru it. Maybe so, according to her medical training, but hormones are powerful!

Well when you have a seizure, you could, regardless of age.

I very rarely have tonic clonics either so that could be what caused it.

From Johns Hopkins Library:

Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTC or also called grand mal seizures). The classic form of this kind of seizure, which may not occur in every case, is characterized by five distinct phases. The body, arms, and legs will flex (contract), extend (straighten out), and tremor (shake), followed by a clonic period (contraction and relaxation of the muscles) and the postictal period. Not all of these phases may be seen in everyone with this type of seizure. During the postictal period, the person may be sleepy, have problems with vision or speech, and may have a bad headache, fatigue, or body aches.

I just wasn't sure if it was uncommon for someone to have had seizures for 12 years and this was the first time that I'd lost my bladder during one, which is what happened with me. I'm almost positive that it was the seizure that caused it to happen too. I know you can loose your bladder during a seizure no matter what your age is.

I started losing my bladder when I was in my 20's. Mainly it was caused by bladder infection.

Every doctor told me since then to drink cranberry juice to prevent it. It works. Try it.

I've only lost control of my bladder once, during the very first seizures I had which were big t-c's on right after the other. But one time I sweated an enormous amount during a seizure -- it was if I'd peed, but I hadn't. Maybe that's what happened to you Valerie?

Seizure types/symptoms can definitely change over time. I hope this is a one-time thing for you, but worth making a note of and seeing if it happens again.

It not nice but don't think should blame e for all of it .i desperate blame e for half my problems but I can't.val is 39 I know she don't want to hear it but if she had children I afraid she just arrived at weak muscles and what childbirth can do I sorry val.
I got great help from continently nurse there are things they can give ladies to strengh them muscles she have pm if wants details, cos I sure not going describe it on public forum it needs batteries.

:hugs:Yeah its a grand mal/tonic clonic. I was diagnosed tonic clonic and wetting, chewing or biting inside of your mouth are classic signs.

The only reason that I think that loosing my bladder is due to epilepsy is because it happened at the exact same time that I was having the grand mal seizure. I wasn't in bed sleeping or sitting on the couch watching tv.

I've never had children so if I don't have strong pelvic muscles I know it's not due to that. If it happens again, not during a seizure, then I will think that there may be other things going on that could have caused it.

You can strengthen your muscles. There are exercises for it. Ask your doctor.

I do believe E is to blame for loosing control, something like this happened to me and to be honest it was not nice and a bit of a shock to the system when it did happen. I did not mention it to the doctor until I satisfied myself and since it stopped I am happy but the thought of it happening again is not nice. I found it embarrassing, but that's me.
