I was hoping to get some advice from someone whose been on MAD or maybe the Ketogenic diet...

My wife has epilepsy, and her Doctor just recently put her on MAD in order to try and reduce/eliminate her medication. She is limited to 30-40 grams of carbs per day, which in and of itself is a challenge, however, something that is puzzling to us is that the pamphlet she was given instructed that her intake of carbs from vegetables could not exceed 15 grams per day. This part is extremely difficult because my wife loves vegetables! I was wondering if you knew why that rule exists? It just seems very arbitrary to me since vegetables encompass such a wide range of foods.

Has anyone else heard of this?

The reason for the rule is to keep sugars to a minimum, and fibers higher. The reason for this is so that your body goes into ketosis by burning primarily fats and proteins, thereby producing ketones which are believed to somehow help with seizures. I tried it for awhile, it seemed to work, plus lost alot of weight.

As far as vegetables, try to stick to the greens, they produce the least carbs, and also take a multivitamin.

The Modified Atkins Diet is simply the first stage of the Atkins Diet

on the ketogenic diet i was informed that veggie carbs were probably the best, never heard of this rule, but then again this is a different diet.

by the way fiber will somewhat even out the carbs, fiber is important in this diet as well.
