Hey guys

Hope you're all well

I just want to let you know. Unlike a lot of others I'm very experimental with my epilepsy. I have a theory that a fitter and healthier we are and the less toxins we carry in our blood stream we can naturally control epilepsy. In short I like natural stuff as an alternative to prescription meds as much as possible.

When I had my first seizure (at 31) epilepsy I became so down and depressed that I stopped looking after myself just didn't care for the next two years roughly my epilepsy degenerated it was controlled with 200 mg of lamictal.

I pulled myself off of my butt and decided I wanted to fix it naturally. I did an entire detox(I have a detox programme I will happily send you if you want) and started looking at how to be less toxic. I changed by diet significantly. Instead of unnatural scents for my house used natural candles.(Particularly lavendar) Then I gradually changed to more and more organic stuff shower gels , tooth paste and a lot of food etc etc, it is more expensive admittedly but I swapped the money I spent on alcohol and smoking and spent it on my health. It really is worth it in the long run if you can afford it. If you can't afford it all do what you can to reduce your toxins

My epilepsy is now controlled with 25 mg of lamictal that's a massive reduction!!

One major thing was Krill oil. Seriously guys Krill oil makes a massive difference way better than fish oil IMO and all your daily RDA allowance of vitamins and minerals, Get a good multivitamin and mineral. If you can do one thing get Krill Oil

Bear in mind I'm not a doctor this is just stuff from my personal experience I found has significantly reduce the meds I take. Don't detox without discussing it with your doctor first please!!!

I'm gonna try and get off the meds all together I truly do believe it's possible.

Take Care everyone and rock on

This I will do, but thanks for sharing your idea.

Actually ammeread, our liver & kidneys work as great filters so that toxins don't get into our bloodstream. I've seen many marketers of supplements & questionable treatments talk about "detox" but anyone who has a knowledge of human biology will know it is not true.

The evidence supporting detox diets is slim to none, but they’re often touted as holistic and popularized by celebrities small and smaller. Scores of slender starlets can’t be wrong – can they?Beth Reardon, MS, RD, nutritionist for Duke Integrative Medicine, gives us the skinny on a recurring diet craze:

It’s not merely the lure of plummeting pounds that draws people to detox diets. There’s powerful appeal in the promise that these diets will cleanse our body of toxins, observes Reardon. “We are bombarded by our food supply, what’s in it, what’s not. We hear about additivies, preservatives, dioxins, carcinogens; we see horrific pictures on the Internet of something that supposedly came out of a colon; and we’re just overwhelmed. The fear factor is pretty convincing. People are grasping to do what makes sense, and the notion of detoxifying the body sounds right. But there just isn’t good science behind detox diets.

The Detox Delusion

I also believe that the whole concept of something being better because it is natural to be a fallacy. I have yet to find a poison or toxin that does not occur in nature yet for some reason "natural" has become a great marketing tool for companies selling everything from food to creams.
Some popular examples of the appeal to nature can be found on labels and advertisements for food, clothing, and alternative herbal remedies.[4] Labels may use the phrase "all-natural", to imply that products are environmentally friendly and/or safe. However, many toxic substances are found in nature, including in common plant sources and herbs such as hemlock, nightshade, belladonna and poisonous mushrooms, and these may have serious side effects.

It has therefore been suggested that whether or not a product is "natural" is irrelevant, in itself, in determining its safety or effectiveness.[4][9]

Even the well-respected Mayo Clinic talk about detox diets.

Detox, or detoxification, diets are popular, but they're not scientifically proven.

Detox diets are touted as a way to remove toxins from the body. Specific detox diets vary — but typically a period of fasting is followed by a strict diet of raw vegetables, fruit and fruit juices, and water. In addition, some detox diets advocate using herbs and other supplements along with colon cleansing (enemas) to empty the intestines.

Some people report feeling more focused and energetic during and after detox diets. However, there's little evidence that detox diets actually remove toxins from the body. Indeed, the kidneys and liver effectively filter and eliminate most ingested toxins. The benefits from a detox diet may actually come from avoiding highly processed foods that have solid fats and added sugar.

Do detox diets offer any health benefits?

Well said epileric, i agree with you; but there comes a point at which i question the counter studies you cite. I know that 'natural' is mostly a hoax to sell. I am a researcher and eat local whole foods. Most really pure food wont even say that it is. Take the local farmer with all organic stuff, sustainably grown and i go and see it and meet them.
AS FAR AS KRILL!!! please be aware that it is a source of chipping away ancient ICE GLACIERS in the ocean to get that stuff. This is not global warming but deliberate destruction of the climate for the American market for 'natural' stuff. It is doing us no good to use that! Look at Biofuels, and the devastation they need to do to make it! and a popular Quinoa , food source, that wipes out tropical living forests to make for the Amerikan market. The list goes on and KRILL is among the worst! Check the source... Who paid for the study? that is what we need to know. A doctor told me it is best to find and read a 'review' of the studies to see the real stuff. This will not be found in the marketplace.

The FDA has issued a warning about the insecticide and mercury content in krill oil, which can cause seizures/lower seizure threshold.

Come on people were toxic there's toxicity all around us. Don't be so naive seriously

The detox and change of lifestyle has done me wonders 200 down to 25 is great news and health wise I've never felt better

Trial and error is the best way to learn anything. You can't believe everything you read on the internet. I understand that includes my post but I've lived it an experienced it all these others present is theories.

If your not experimental with your epilepsy that's your choice it's also your choice to not take my opinion. I'm just telling you what I know from personal experience having lived it , it's not some theory, it's practice.

Also consider there are many detox diets some are crap and some are excellent that took me trial and error. Same with Krill Oil some are crap and some are excellent, again trial and error.

Don't be so negative you lot, stand up and fight. Always look for a better way. There's always a better way.

Cry babies!!! LOL :-p

I have not tried the detox yet but a better diet and krill I have dropped from 500mg to 50mg and have never felt better. Remember ya'll, docs get money from each prescription you fill. Thats why most of the time, they say 'increase another 100 mg'

Wait a minute. In your original post you said after ONE seizure, you became so depressed and stopped taking care of yourself. Who was the cry baby?!

I have looked for better ways to control my seizures, but after many injuries from seizures, there is no way I would go down the route you've taken to control my seizures. I'm not being naive. Too many quacks out there. I prefer a medical dr. with plenty of education in epilepsy to handle my refractory E.

And Screamy, maybe some doctors do increase the meds, but remember, too, that the dr. is working for you and you have the right to say NO. I've had to tell my epileptologist "NO" several times.

Don't get upset it's just a joke tying to inject some positivity into the forum.

Ammeread - you are the one who is naive in calling the people here "cry babies". These people have been dealing with epilepsy all their lives. You have been dealing with it since 2010 based on your bio. You haven't gone through what they have gone through, you haven't had to try brain surgery to stop your seizures or a DBS or VNS. Did you read about Charlotte who was having 300+ seizures a week and whose parents resorted to marijuana high in cbd and it helped bring her down to a few seizures a week?

I'm not saying a good diet isn't important - that's true for everyone not just epileptics. And you admit to smoking and drinking and a generally unhealthy lifestyle.

Good for you that you got things under control health wise.

But what of the environmental impacts of using krill for their oil? Krill are the basics of the food supply for the larger fish. Same is true for most fish oil. So you might be doing great for you but what about the fish that depend of this food.

I use Ovega-3 Oil made from farm raised algae. Has none of the toxins we dumped into the ocean and it doesn't deplete the food supply for the fish.

We all have our own opinions and our own problems with epilepsy.
I thought it great when you expressed your personal findings.
I thought it incredibly insensitive when you said that people here are naive and cry babies.

Didn't mean to upset you just having a joke that's all. I'm sorry.

I'm a certified nutritionist and personal trainer I qualified Jan this year. Health and nutrition is not only my job but my passion.

I find it incredibly irritating when people parrot others when they don't know the subject yet pass themselves off as experts.

I started the thread to try and help people but basically I got told that I know nothing.

People are entitled to their opinion. Mines professional . We are Toxic it's that simple. People type all sorts of crap theories all over the internet they can't all be true it's that simple. People talk about detoxes that aren't even detoxes it' that's simple. Alcohol and caffeine two things to avoid as epileptics are toxic that is a massive part of why we avoid them it's that simple.

Now with regard your environmental aspect I agree but this is the way I see it. Just because you refuse to buy Krill is not gonna stop people catching them. It's still gonna go on at exactly the same rate. It's the same with every environmental aspect. Driving cars, solvents, paper.

The decision is do I continue to suffer with my epilepsy just to make a point that isn't going to make a difference anyway or do I not. I choose not. That's my personal choice as is yours.

Differing opinions are welcoming, name-calling is not.

Let's try and get this thread back on track.

:)

So you would rather give your money to "Joe Blow" maker of whatever detox and Krill products you buy, which likely are not FDA approved, have not been tested for purity and have not had years of clinical trials to assess benefit vs. harm??
Believe me, the manufacturers of detox products, Krill oil and all those other supplements and "natural cures" out there are making WAY more dollars off the gullible public then your neurologist with his/her years of training and experience is making off of prescriptions he/she writes for you.

The topic of non-traditional treatments for seizures is an important and valid one, but the initial poster got the discussion off on the wrong foot with inappropriate choices of words. I agree this thread should be locked, and perhaps restarted if there are people here who would still like to discuss non-traditional treatments. The forum is a place for learning and discussion; a place to pass on information and ideas that may get others to rethink their own thoughts and beliefs, and learn new ideas to research and ask their doctors about.

Thanks all. it is fun to read ALL the comments on this thread. I remember the great benefits to sharing what I've done and what works for me. And leave it at that, not telling anyone else what to do or that what they think is wrong or any suggestion that different techniques aren't valid.

My friends with epilepsy recommended that I use a lot of natural herbs and roots a long time ago. I noticed my friends were having more seizures.

We did not have the internet back then, so I went to the library and looked up the herbs and roots that were recommended for epilepsy. Detox wasn't thought about back then.

Did you know that some natural herbs and roots are made into medicines and approved by the FDA? Valium is one that comes from a natural root.

Have you looked up the natural herbs and roots that you are taking? You can do a quick search on the internet.

I have done the same as Janus and the others, I tell what works for me. It might not work for anyone else. We are all individuals.

Dilantin worked for my sister and father. I was so allergic to Dilantin that the doctors thought that I was going to die. I had Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. That is where you start losing your skin. The only thing that the doctors could have used was penicillin. In 1949, there were not any other antibiotics.
