Hello all,

My name is Christine and I was diagnosed with ideopathic E back in 2006 but didn't have a tonic clonic seizure until 2008. Since then I've tried Lamictol, Dilantin and Keppra; the latter is the only medication I've tried that remotely agrees with me!

My husband and I are preparing to conceive our first child together and my GP struck the fear of God into our hearts regarding the possible risk factors of mental/physical birth defects of a fetus exposed to AEDs. I have been taking 500mg of Keppra daily and it does the trick! Otherwise I'd be twitching constantly. Has anyone had positive or negative pregnancy experiences while on Keppra/while their partner has been on Keppra?

I look forward to getting feedback of all sorts from all the lovely people on this forum!

Until soon!

CJ

Hello and welcome! I wish you and your husband the best of luck. I don't know about the interactions of medications on baby making cuz I am way past that part of my life. I am sure that there are several people here to help out.

Hi Christine, welcome to CWE!

As I'm sure the neuro has told you, folic acid is very important if you're considering having children. You should be taking 400 mcg (0.4 mg) of folic acid (folate) daily.

As with many of the anti-seizure meds, it's a matter of weighing the risk of seizures against the risks posed by the meds. Make sure your neuro and your OB/GYN are on the same page when it comes to monitoring your Keppra levels during pregnancy, and on whether or not to breastfeed (since Keppra is excreted in breast milk).

I know we have some moms who've had safe pregnancies and healthy kids while on Keppra -- hopefully they'll chime in soon. In the meantime, here are some threads that should be useful:
