I've had toxic phenytoin levels for a month but today's result came back normal so there's no longer an issue. I've been feeling wildly tired. I have no energy, but the oddest thing is that I am always so hot. It's the middle of winter here and everyone's complaining about how cold it is. And I'm running around wearing next to nothing, feeling overheated. I asked my doc whether my energy and so forth was just because the toxicity had taken it out of me and she said yes, there's no need to go to the GP, and that even the seizures that I had before a month ago will still be affecting me badly. So I've decided to cut off my clients for a few days and take a serious rest break. But the temperature thing bothers me. I can tell you that my thyroid is absolutely normal, as is my full blood count, so presumably that means I have no infections of any sort. And if it matters, I also have perfect blood glucose levels, and electrolyte levels. Oh, and no seizures really for 40 days or so.

Let's see, you're having no seizures, your labs are good, you're keeping warm in the winter, and giving us the opportunity to imagine you running around in next to nothing. Where's the down side? :)

Seriously, though, I hope there is nothing wrong with you. I don't have any knowledge about the overheating business, except that it sounds strange. You are too young for it, but as you know menopause can give you hot flashes. I know what you have is more than a "flash", but do you think there could there be any sort of weird hormonal thing going on?

I hope you get this figured out!

:D True, that.

Okay, so now we're talking about menopause. D'ya think you could have stuck with the optimistic stuff? You're right, though, it could very well be hormonal. Last time I had a test was two years ago. It's probably time to have another look--I have reason to.

:roflmao: I totally missed this section. It was completely invisible when I read it the first time. It's really annoying when you type in invisible text, and not very practical either.

The part of the that brain regulates body temperature is the hypothalamus. So all sorts of things that stress the hypothalamus can potentially cause the sensation of overheating. Hormones are one stressor, but of lot of the things that people with seizures or migraines are sensitive to can also cause hot flashes or make them worse: alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, spicy foods, exercise, fat, chocolate, sleep deprivation, stress... My vote would be for the phenytoin though, even now that you are at a lower dose. I remember that I felt overheated when I was on it. I think it may due to the way phenytoin increases estrogen metabolism.

Interesting, Nak. I read around a bit and it does at least make sense to me that I shouldn't be feeling on top of the world at the moment. My level also went down from 30 to 12 in 10 days. Not sure what that would do. I'm not going to tolerate it for long. I've cleared thurs and fri, so I'll take a long weekend of serious sleeping, and if I'm still a mess on Monday I'm going to my GP just to check everything out and see what's going on.

I hope you have a restful, refreshing weekend...

Well, I am at the end of my last day off. I'm wearing two pairs of socks, stockings, yoga pants, three knitted tops, a hoodie, and I have a quilt and a blanket over me. So the temperature issue is absolutely fixed. For the last two days I felt clear and I didn't need to sleep, and for the days before that I was putting in a good 16 hours of sleep a day. Something has gone right. The dentist tells me my gums are better. My glands are back down. If I can just keep my serum levels up I will be as good as new, but this time around I'll be paying a lot more attention to how these doctors manage things. Seriously, I have three doctors on my case and all three of them screwed up.

I'm glad you're back to normal. Now I visualize you dressed up like some of those kids in the cartoons, where you are like a ball and can barely waddle around. It's super frustrating when the docs aren't all that helpful. Been there, done that!

Thanks for the link to the drug reference Kirsten. It looks very helpful indeed.

And it's great that you are feeling better!
