So I'm not sure if I had a seizure. I had just fallen asleep when I was woken up because I felt these pins and needles all over my body. I could feel them more stronger on my back than any where else. I think that I fell back to sleep for just a minute or so. I'm not sure and then the pains woke me up again. Soon after that I could feel my body moving up my bed and I couldnt open my eyes. It was like they were fluttering when you are really tired but I couldnt control them. My mom took me to the ER but the doctor there said that he didnt think that it was a seizure because I could recall what happened. What do you guys think?

Hi Rachael - what ever it is called, you had something abnormal happen.
If you are not prone to seizures, I was told anyone can have a seizure. In fact we all have a seizure threshold. If it was a seizure, for some reason your seizure threshold was lowered tonight. Nutrition, fatigue, blood sugar levels, vitamin or mineral deficiency, dehydration, stress, can all lead to neurological abnormal activity.

Eat well, sleep well, and attempt to keep your days stress free.

Most of the time, when someone says it "probably wasn't a seizure" I have heard just the opposite from a different doctor. Understand that it was a warning, that something is not right. Take heed.

Thank you Robin. I had forgotten to mention that I also couldnt move during the whole thing either. That was the part that freaked me out. But the ER doctor thought it was something else. My mom wasnt very happy about that. He said that it was too late for an EEG test because we were past the hour mark. So I'm getting it followed up with my regular doctor. Beter to be safe right?

What do you mean "past the hour mark"? Was it too late in the day? I see no reason not to make an appointment for an EEG.

Hi Rachel,

I've had the "pins and needles" feeling twice before. The first time last December and it lasted quite awhile and only on one side and then about 3 - 4 months later followed shortly there after with a seizure. I would agree with epileric.

sounds to me more like sleep paralysis and/or sleep apnea. while your brain is trying to get to sleep, and your body obeys but your mind does not.

I'm assuming by "the hour mark" the doctor was expecting to see residual signs of the seizure on the EEG. You still should get one done. also mark down anything "weird" or unusal things that have happened to you before. a CT scan or MRI should also be booked just as a precaution, as well as a sleep test if this is infact a sleep phenomenon.

next time it happens (IF it does) fo straight to the ER or call an ambulance if you feel that would be better. it could also be that your blood pressure changes while in a lying down position for some reason. as your brain is now level with your heart. Can you think of anything that you did different this time than any others?

new food? meds? period or pregnancy changes? allergy? not eating before bed? eating too much before bed? any little thing that may seem insignificant to you could have triggered it. EX: you eat mango all the time. but dont recall having it before bed. You body changes its hormone cycle and other cycles for fasting and sleeping so the mango may have reacted with you during that time.

It is odd that you remember that event, which makes me think that it would be a complex partial at worst, simple partial most likely. If it is a tonic clonic, it is highly unusal to remember them.

There are simple partial seizure in which people remember what happens but cannot control what is going on with their bodies. normally an ER staff or doctor would be able to tell somewhat what's going on..
BUT seeing a neurologist would be the best thing- or even an Epileptologist but normally you have to be reffered if a doctor suspects seizures or other neurological condition.

Take care

Pins and needles could be lots of things. You need to see your primary care physician and get a workup for all possible causes, including mini-stroke, etc. Sometimes something like this is a heads up for something more serious later in life. It's probably nothing serious, but you should be checked anyway. A full workup would include a full blood panel, MRI, CAT scan, EEG, heart tests, etc. Hopefully you have insurance?

Sometimes it is so hard to get to the bottom of things. Keep after the doctors and don't give up. Be that noisy, question-asking, demanding patient until you get answers. Demand a referral to a specialist where you think it would help.

P.S. Some people have one seizure, and never have another again. It takes two or more seizures before it is defined as epilepsy.

Thanks everyone. I have an appointment tomorrow for my regular doctor. And in late Sep. I have an appointment with a nero for my migraines. I think that I will bring this up to him too. Both me and my mom appreciate all of the advice. It was a big help to us.

I was able to treat my 30+ years of migraines with magnesium supplements. I have not had a migraine in 5 yrs now. Magnesium was prescribed for Rebecca too.
Neither one of us is on prescription medication.
