Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this situation...

One of my 5 year old twins has had epilepsy for 1 year now. He is on Trileptal and takes B6 and magnesium (Thanks to all of you who suggested I try this and told me your own stories. Our Dr. never mentioned this). The combo of meds and vitamins greatly reduced his seizures. He still had seizures about 4 times a week, only in the morning, within two hours of waking up.

Three weeks ago I took him for his blood draw. For the first time I took him in the morning, rather than the afternoon. All he had to eat was cereal. The results were that his sodium level was low. After reading that Trileptal reduces the sodium level in a person's body, I started giving him 1/4 cup organic veg. broth first thing in the morning with his medicine.

For two weeks he has been seizure free and less tired. Has anyone else had a sodium level deficiency along with seizures? Does anyone know of anything I should be aware of by giving my child broth every morning? The Dr. says it's okay, but I've learned more from this forum than I have from the Dr.

Thank you!

I once took Trileptal and it did lower my sodium level, also. My neuro eventually took me off that drug because of it. Just make sure the dr. keeps a close eye on his sodium level.

I took trileptal for 3 years and it worked fantastic, but over time it lowered my sodium level. Eventually my doc said I can only drink 1 or 2 pints of liquid a day (seriously!! Who can drink that little. Thats not healthy.)

I said, well can’t I just eat more salt :) (I’m a passionate salt enthusiast). He crushed my brilliant idea when he said, but more salt with make you drink more and won’t solve the problem. Anyways, I ended up switching medications.

Its ironic that an AED side effect can cause seizures. Who knew salt was so important. I'm pushing to get a salt lick installed at home.

I have a problem with eating lots of sugar. I have always eaten insanely large amounts of salt (which is typically 40% sodium), like when I eat stake it get's hidden under salt. But my doctor always has my blood work come out perfectly, no problems what so ever, everything well inside safety peramiters. I don't take Trileptal, but maybe there could be a sodium epilepsy connection?

Sodium is one of the important electrolytes of the human body, along with potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. We need them for our cells and organs to function properly. So if there is an electrolyte abnormality, it could possibly cause seizures or numerous other problems.
