Tonight I recieved a call from a woman who said she was forwarded my information about the ER visit I had on January 25th. She said she sat down with the Dr who treated me and gave me the Levaquin, and said he gave it to me because I had a SEVERE case of pneumonia. He said he saw the medications I was taking, and since my seizures have been mainly under control with my seizure medications, that it wouldnt have affected me like my pharmacist and family dr said it would have. He said it affects the "Central Nervous System"..... Ah, correct me if Im wrong, but isnt that the place where my seizures come from? She informed me that since I reported this, it will be sent to a review meeting of drs and such, who will be taking over. She wont know anything more, or I wont since its out of her hands as of now.

She asked if I recieved my refund? I said no. Told her Ive been getting the run around by the lady whom we have spoken to since January 26th. She said she would get right on that and make sure the check is sent out to me.

Just the way she put things to me, made me realize that this dr has no clue as to what he is talking about or doing. I told her after having many experiences with their hospital, all good ones, this was the only bad one that made me feel uncomfortable about going back there again. The last thing I want is to have a seizure. I followed my pharmacist's and Dr's advise and got a new medication. It must be working, because I feel 500% better! But she made it sound like since my pneumonia was such a severe case, it was something I had to have in order for it to go away. If it was such a severe case, why the hell wasnt I hospitalized then? It just doesnt make a whole lot of sense.

All I can say is that after I get my refund, I will put all of this behind me.

Mom,

Well done!

You've done everything you can do. And rest assured, the peer review committee will take a deep hard look at what the doctor did, and said. No one will know the actual outcome, but if they find that he made a bad mistake, there could be disciplinary actions. At the very least this won't happen again to anyone else, at least where this doctor is concerned.

Thanks Endless!

I am just glad it got in the hands of another person besides the lady that we first spoke to. She was giving us a run around, and probably hoping we would just drop it.

Im glad that this will be reviewed and hopefully will prevent this dr from doing this again to another patient.

Even if the ER doc thought that the Levaquin was the lesser of two evils, and was necessary to treat the pneumonia despite the risk of seizures (and I'm not saying that this is actually the case), then he should have let you know that, so that you could be prepared. So yeah, his story is extremely fishy.

I admire your persistence! And I hope you have the refund in hand soon.

I agree with you 100%! Something about his story just doesnt seem right.

I hope to have the refund in my hand soon too!

Agreed! Especially since there are other equally effective antibiotics available. Fishy, fishy, fishy. He just got sloppy.

Yeah, I even brought that up to the lady today when she called me. She kept saying over and over how I had such a severe case of pneumonia, that I had to have the STRONGEST medication possible. Since that is the strongest medication they use, thats what he prescribed me. Thats when I told her what my pharmacist and family dr had said, both of them told me not to continue taking that and I was prescribed Azithromycin 5 Day Dose Pack. Of course, there wasnt much she could say after that.

I didnt know I had a severe case of pneumonia. But I was told my some friends and my aunt who is a nurse that in most cases, if its severe, you are hospitalized. Somethings she was saying, just didnt add up too.

I have

to agree, things don't add up.

I've had pneumonia, a few times, and once it was supposedly severe--but I didn't know I had it. Hmmmmmm. But the same Azithromycin knocked it right on its arse, pretty darn quick.

Thing is, when I hear the word "severe" used with something anymore, I roll my eyes at the doctor involved, then stare directly at them. Then I say, "I suppose I have to check into the hospital now? Cuz if it's severe, I'm not gonna shove it onto everyone around me."

It's amazing how things are re-phrased after that...........:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao: :roflmao:

Did the ER doctor have the lab run cultures on your sputum to verify that you had an anti-biotic resistant form of bacterial pneumonia?
If no cultures were run, then the DR had no idea what he was treating and now the DR and hospital are trying to cover their butt's.

You are correct, the central nervous system does include the brain (where seizures occur :ponder:) and is the precise reason that quinolones should not be used as first line anti-biotics in epileptics unless you have proven you are dealing with an anti-biotic resistant bacteria.

Silly DR's:roflmao:

Dear Momof3boys,

Well certainly sounds like the emergency doctors are trying to cover their butts and don't know whatthey are talking about at all and are lying though their teeth as well. I really believe that all the doctors that dealt with your care while you were in the Emergency Room for your pneumonia should be investigated and while they are being investigated they should be suspended from their work at the hospital until all investigations are completed. If at that time, the hospital thinks that they had the potential to cause great harm to you then they all should be fired or at least remain on suspension until they get more information on epilespsy!!! Of course, I think that they all should lose their jobs because of the severe lack of care/concern they had for you, their lack of knowledge and the fact that they are being so dishonest!

Personally if your pneumonia was as severe as the emerency doctor is saying then why didn't he admit you??? Admitted you and have the hosptial keep an eye on regards to the medication he gave you can cause seizures/more seizures in people who have epilepsy!!! And when you were relesed - with you still neede medication then give you one that was safe for people with epilepsy to use!

Very happy to hear that the medication you were prescribed by your doctor is working so well and hoping you are 100% healthy very soon - if you aren't already! Hoping you are!!!

Thats exacly what was going through my head yesterday when this woman was telling me from my chart, that it said I had a severe case of pneumonia.

The medication that my family dr prescribed me worked very well and Im back on my feet feeling great!

From what I know the drs did, was they took 2 x-rays, and drew some blood. The blood results took about an hour if that, and thats when the dr himself came in and said I had pneumonia. He didnt say anything about it being severe, but said I would need something strong.

He did come in after the x-rays were taken and said from the looks of them, he asked if I had pneumonia before? I said no. Ive heard of it, but have never had it. He also said if its not that, it could possibly be a blood clot. That scared me when he said that. but after then, they did the blood work and from that, he said it came back pneumonia.

Nothing was said it was bacterial pneumonia, or walking pneumonia, etc.

The cultures usually don't come back for a couple of weeks, at least. So he had no way of knowing if it was bacterial or viral pnumonia. He could tell it was pnumonia from the chest x-rays. Docs usually throw antibiotics at it in any case, since it needs to be treated right away. If it was viral it wouldn't have gotten better very quickly. It would have taken weeks, if at all, and might have taken support in the hospital.

Way to go! We should always be proactive about our care and if things aren't done properly then we must bring it to someone's attention or the person who comes after us could suffer. I've done it twice myself...with an ER nurse who was stuck in heaven only knows what decade with her archaic understanding of E and with a clinic Dr. who put my life in jeopardy after my telling him I didn't feel "right" just prior to a minor outpatient surgical procedure during which I went into anaphylactic shock.

I am so glad that they got you on the correct meds and you are feeling so much better and that you are getting a refund! That the Dr. is actually going to face a review board is phenominal!!!!:rock::rock:

Yes, I will be happy to let you know when I recieve my refund!

Im glad that the dr had to go through board meetings to deal with this situation. I'm hoping it will prevent him from giving this medication to another patient who has Epilepsy.
