Hi,

My daughter has been having episodes where she just closes off for a bit for months now. I have tried to write them off with other explanations, which due to a pause in the episodes after questioning her about it made it easier to do. But lately its gotten to the point where I can no longer deny it. So last night I researched it and came across childhood absence epilepsy which sounds like exactly what she has. I will take her to go see a dr for a referral so i can confirm whether this is the case or not, and to see a specialist, but was just wondering if anybody else has had experience with this as i'd like some information, some advice from those with experience, and to ask some questions.

Thanks,

Nancy

Hope the cause is found out soon and that your daughter will get help quickly :)

Hi NancyH, welcome to CWE!

Absence seizures can be tricky because they are so fleeting and are often confused with "being inattentive" or "daydreaming". How old is your daughter? How long have the episodes been going on? You may find some of the threads below from our archives helpful. I don't know if this would work for your daughter, but the first link below notes that taking a manganese supplement made the absences go away in one case.

tase37: Thank-you :)

Nakamova: My daughter is 6, and has had the episodes for probably around 10 months....with a gap of maybe a couple of months in between....or perhaps they just slowed down to the point where we didnt notice them...I'm not entirely sure.

Thanks for the links, I'll have a read of them tonight. I much prefer the idea of giving magnesium to drugs....I'm really hoping its not necessary. I've also read that a change in diet can sometimes help...I think low grain/low sugar, but need to look into it more. She is booked in for a drs appointment on thursday, so hopefully it will get the ball rolling.

It's a good thing that you're going to get her checked out because my dr says that I may have had E all of my life due being hit by a car when I was a child. My family just thought that I day dreamed a lot. God bless you and your child. :)
