Hey there,
i've been getting this very strange feeling, its not often, but when it does occur, I really dont like it. Maybe you can help me work out what it is, or if its natural, or whatever.

It started for the first time a few years ago, I got invited to my friends house, and during my visit, he decided to show me his strobe light, we closed the curtains and made the room pretty much pitch black, and then he turned on the light, it was amazing fun for the first, what – 10 minutes? Then I started to get this strange feeling, its very hard yo describe, but here goes.. it was like I was zoned out, and what was happening around me wasn't really happening, and I wasn't choosing what my body was doing, my hearing would feel as though it had got quieter, and I was feeling slightly off balanced, I really felt uncomfortable, so made my friend turn it off. For around 20 minutes afterwards the feeling was still there, and I would be just sort of staring into space, and feeling very.. strange. Sort of surreal, like a dream. It wore off and I thought nothing much of it.

I went to this friends house again about a year later, he said again, lets get my strobe light out. Because of the long gap from my last experience I thought, it may have just been a one time thing, tired maybe. This time I got the feeling after around 5 minutes, and the longer I stayed with the light on, the worse it got. I made him stop it again, and I felt even worse afterwards then last time, very sweaty and really uncomfortable. It wore off again, so I just thought “simple, dont go near strobe lights”

the third time it happened to me was when I was awake, but no strobe light, I had been awake for around 20 hours, so was very tired, yet I kept my eyes open as much as I could, until, the horrible surreal feeling hit me, the exact same as with the strobe light. Up until this point I thought it could have been epilepsy or something, but then I thought but I thought that was due to flashing lights, thus why would sleepiness effect it?

It happened one final time when I was invited to my friends gig, there was no real flashing lights, but more came on due to the loudness of the music possibly? And the dark room contrasting with the bright lights?

I love music, and am scared to go to a concert, I would fear that this feeling would happen.. and I would try just ignore it, I really have to snap myself out of it because it seems to stack.. if I just went with It I really don't know what would happen, maybe it would just stay at a certain level, or maybe have worse consequences.

I never used to experience this, and I can remember going to discos and partys with stobe lights, and loud music, and I just enjoyed it, and never got the feeling

It really bothers me, is it normal, and something we all just experience, but i'm just going crazy about it? Is it something like epilepsy? Is it due to something i'm doing? Stress? Lack of sleep? Maybe its something that started in puberty? Anything at all? If you have any suggestions or possible causes, as random as they may be, I would be glad to hear, maybe I can piece something together.

So in conclusion, the questions are:
1) What is this?
2) Is it more than likely epilepsy, or could it be something else, like migraine?
3) Could it go away? Why has it only started now?
4) can this get worse? will it get worse?
5) If I just stay in the conditions, (flashing lights etc) and don’t move away from them, what would happen? Would it just stay at that rate? Or get worse? Or fade away? Lead to a full blown seizure where I loose consciousness?

I looked on the internet and it seems like a simple partial seizure which im experiencing however looking at them they appear to last for around 3 mins max, now Im pretty sure mine would last a lot longer than that if I stayed looking at the strobe light, or flashing light, or stayed awake when I was tired. They only seem to go when im away from the conditions, and then it seems to “fade” away opposed to just stop.

Here is how its feeling once again. Very surreal, distorted sound, gormless, unbalanced, cannot think, not really taking in the environment, just zoning into my head, find myself staring a lot.

I'm 15 years old and its quite upsetting, my parents dont know about it, and im quite a shy guy, so I just don't tell them, I don't think I could have the courage to go to the doctors or something.. its just how I am.

Please give me as much detail as possible, I really want to work this thing out, please.

Thank you very much for your time reading this, hope to hear any suggestions from you, it would mean a lot to me. Thank you again,
Sam :)

Hi Sam, welcome to CWE --

You may be photosensitive. Some people are triggered by strobing or flashing lights, light and dark patterns, fluorescent lights, computer screens, etc. It's hard to determine if what you're experiencing is a migraine aura, or a simple partial seizure. They are closely-related phenomena, and the best diagnosis would have to come from a doctor. It's definitely possible to get a migraine aura without getting the headache, so that could be what's going on.

Migraine auras can happen once, perhaps provoked by stress or fatigue, and then never happen again (that's the case with a friend of mine and also my sister). It's also not unusual to experience auras or seizures as a teenager, and then never again. Teenagers are more prone to imbalances in terms of hormones, nutrition, hydration, sleep, etc. I recommend that you do your best to stay generally healthy and moderate in your behavior. Try wearing polarized sunglasses, esp. to events where you know there may be flashing lights -- they are known to help people with photosensitivity. And keep a journal to record if and when you experience any strange stuff. If the odd sensations seems to be escalating in frequency or duration, see a doctor.

Best,
Nakamova

hello sam and welcome......
I would recommend you talk to your parents and a visit to your doctor before you freak yourself out......maybe it is migraine like Nakamova suggested.
Best of Luck to you.....and let us know what the doctor says.

I'll echo what Daisy said. Talking to your parents and seeing a doctor is an important step. What you are experiencing could be one of a number of things. No need to worry yet. If a regular primary care physician doesn't give you answers, ask to see a neurologist. If you don't get an answer there, a doctor called an epi is a specialist in seizures.
